Headed out in a few hours to test out the new 24/7-9SSP-17. Just running cheap ammo, Federal 115g FMJ. Expecting AMAZING things from the reviews I've read, and will post my experience here, just for the heck of it.
Wife's going with me too, and we're shooting a S&W Sigma 9mm that she got from her dad. She keeps talking trash about how she's gonna prove she's the better shot... ;D
Well, what can I say? I love this handgun! My wife and I have handgun experience, but only with .22 caliber weapons, so this was a completely different experience for both of us. There was a bit more kick than either one of us expected, and quite a bit more noise. Plus, we were shooting at 10 yards, about 10 feet farther than any previous experience. Absolutely zero FTF or FTE.
Started out very low/left and slowly crept my way in to the center of the target. The 1st shot was outside of the marked area, the next 4 barely within the 5 point marker. Talk about hanging my head in shame! Since the wifer and I were just splitting a box of ammo (50 rds) for this first experience, I made up my mind to make the next 20 count, and found my basic feel for the gun. The next 20 (+7 more she didn't want to fire) all grouped together in an area I could cover with one hand, fingers slightly spread, and all within 5" of center (12 inside the blackened center), and I ended up feeling much more comfortable with my new companion. The single action pull is surprisingly smooth!
2 biggest things I learned are:
1) I need more range time with this beautiful gun.
2) I need even more range time after that!
Time to break her down, now, and give her a good cleaning, then start anticipating my next trip!
For the record, my wife did NOT outshoot me. In fact, she's decided she doesn't much like the 9mm... I'll get her to fire it a few more times before we decide on a CCW for her.
My first handgun the PT145, was quite a shock to me my first time to the range. I had shot some small handguns as a kid but basically this was my first time out ever. I had a hard time getting over this "big" ol' "explosion" in my hands at about 30" from my face. A week later, on my next trip, I was a lot more ready for it but still mostly only noticed that "explosion".
But the next trip or two after that I was able to see past the explosions and was able to focus on the other stuff. Try to get her to stick it out through 2 or 3 more trips and she will get to feeling better about it. I'm sure that was quite a shock coming from a 22.
Firts off, welcome to the forum pretzel!
print out the shooters chart below and study it, take it with you on the next range trip and see if it doesn't help you and the wife .
enjoy!

VERY handy chart, thanks! I've spent the last three nights dry-firing at home while watching TV, paying close attention to any movement in the sight, and found that I'm probably putting too much finger on the trigger? (I put a question mark because I'm a rookie)
With my normal grip, the trigger was settling in the the bend of my first knuckle, but when I remember to fire with just the pad of my finger on the trigger, I keep a MUCH straighter aim. I'm sure my next trip to the range will tell for sure. Now I just have to work on the rest of my grip...
You are more than welcome!
yep the trigger control is a lot of the accuracy!
just try the amount of finger on the trigger as you shoot and you will find the right spot.
I normally use the pad only but everyone is a bit different.
concentrate only on the front sight, the target will be blured and in the background , the rear sight will also be slightly blurred, the front sight is what you are fixed on.
Welcome and great range report. Glad the wife likes to shoot as well. I was surprised at the nice snap my 24/7 Pro DS has when firing it.....really got my attention after that first shot.
